Background :

Annamayya salutes and beautifully glorifies lord Narayana's qualities using great examples in this kIrtana.

Meaning :

Pa:

O Lord SrI VEnakTEswarA ! Salutations to You lord. You are filled completely with the sinless (pAvana) qualities( guNa gaNa).

bhAva: - bhavatIti bhAva: (the one with the great [visishTa] qualities).

Ca 1 :

O Lord ! You are the supporter of the whole universe (jagadAdhArA). You are with the four arms. You are the one with the complexion of cloudy sky blue (gagana nIla mEgha syAma ). You are the one, whose holy feet duo was praised by the vEdAs (sacred texts, which are not written by anyone ) themselves (nigama pAda yuga ). You are the one with the lotus in your navel (umbilicus ) [nIraja nAbha].

Here the "nigama pAda yuga" can also be interpreted as - You are the one , whose holy feet duo is equal to the VedAs, which shows that the only way to the salvation from the bondage is thy holy feet duo.

Ca 2 :

O lord ! You are such a mercyful , who will allow the "VEdAnta" (vEdas consists of 2 paarts, pUrva bhAgam (karma kAnDamu) and uttara bhAgam (JnAna kAnDamu). The uttara bhAgamu (later part ) is called as "vEdAnta" or "upanishads" which tries to know the lord) to make an attempt to know who you are.

Note : If anyone has doubt regarding the above statement, they are advised to refer "Ananda valli", from "TaittirIya Upanishad". Where , Ananda valli tries to measure the Bliss (Just one of HIS qualities) of Lord Narayana in the multiples of hundreds of the bliss of a king, then indra, then brahma ...like that the list goes and finally it loses hope and tells that it can't measure the Bliss of the Lord Narayana ( vEdanta thus unable to measure not even a single qualityof lord, how can it knows about the completeness of the Lord) .

You are the one , who possess the golden conch and discus always attached ( karAnkita - they are ankitam to HIS hands only) to your hand. You are the one , who has the Sun (dina maNi) and Moon (sashAnka - sashamu (kundElu, the rabbit) anka - machcha (mark), so Moon is said to be sashAnka, the one with the rabbit mark in him) as HIS divine eyes (divya vilOchana).

You are the one , who has the peerless red colored lips .

Note: bimba - donDa ( bimba phalamu - donDa panDu) , adhara - lips. It is in common practice to compare the lips of beautiful ladies as " donDa panDu lAnti pedavulu" , if it is that much beautiful with the normal human beings created by the Brahma (the creator of the bodies of all the jivAs), then HOW MUCH BEAUTIFUL WILL BE THE CREATOR OF THE Brahma himself. That is why Annamayya used the phrase "anupama" , the peerless or matchless . The lips are in red color (ravi bimbadhara).

synonyms for bimba - donDa (one type of fruit) , voosara velli ( a creature belongs to snake family), chAya (shadow).


Ca 3 :

O Lord ! you are the father (janaka) of both "Manmadha" (bhAvaja) and "Brahma" (kanja - lotus, bhava -emerged, hence kanjabhava - brahma). You are the lovely consort of Sri Mahalakshmi (Sri VanitA hridayEsA). You are the dweller of the Sri VEnkatagiri . O ! The lord with the sinless qualities ...pAvan guNagana bhAva.

Background:

This kIrtana is a special kIrtana, in its way of telling auspicious prosperity to the Lord Sriman Narayana. Here Annamayya considers some of the precious stones for his explanation of the greatness of Lord VEnkaTEswara.

Note:

Only Periya ALwAr (Big devotee), out of 12 ALwars sung such type of "MangalAsAsana pAsurams" (poems towards his prosperity). He is also called as "VishNu chitta"(the one who has lord vishNu in his heart) and is the father of AnDAL.


Meaning:

Pa:

O Hari !May there be auspicious prosperity to you , the armor of our heart (chittajaguruDA). May there be auspicious prosperity to you, who resides in our hearts (as antaryAmi).

Here HE (Lord Narayana ) is both the in dweller and the protector (like armor) of our heart.

Ca 1 :

O Hari !May there be auspicious prosperity to you , who has decorated the chest with the young lady who is like a beautiful golden idol. May there be auspicious prosperity to you, who is glowing (chengalinchE) with the colorful and gorgeous silk cloth (peethAmbaram) around HIS waist.

Ca 2 :

O Hari ! May there be auspicious prosperity to you, who gave birth to the pious lady (Ganga) from HIS holy feet whose color is like beautiful precious blue stones. May there be auspicious prosperity to you, who wears the most glowing "kousthubha maNi" (The most precious gemstone emerged from the milky ocean) and who is like the gemstone of the gods (chintAmaNi) for HIS devotees.


Ca 3 :

O SrI VEnkaTEsA ! May there be auspicious prosperity to you, who poured the pearls in the form of "talambrAlu" (sirulu dAlchina) on the head of the beautiful lady, who is like peerless (aridi) green stone (In mariages, the Bride and Groom repeatedly pour rice mixed with turmeric powder and vermillion to signify the beginning of their association). May there be auspicious prosperity to you, who possess the great wealth and who is the consort of Sri Mahalakshmi (goddess of wealth).

Background:

Annamayya in this kIrtana prays to Sri Maha Lakshmi to look after all the creatures by reminding HER great qualities to shower the mercy on all of us .

Meaning:

pa:

Oh Mother ! Jaya lakshmi - the goddess of victory, varalakshmi - the goddess of boons, sangrAma vIra lakshmi - the goddess of courage, Lord Hari (lord Narayana) got you as HIS Love(priyurAlu).

Ca 1 :

Oh Mother ! You are the true Essence cream of the milky ocean. You are the Excellent fragrance of the best lotus. You stayed on the chest of the (blue colored) lord Narayana with elegance. You are the ruler of whole universe...So please rule us also with mercy.

Ca 2 :

Oh Mother ! You are the Best one of those who emerged along with Moon (thus SHE is the sister of Moon) from the milky ocean. You are the Best protector of even the Brahma (four faced god) itself. You are always associated with the lord GOvinda (Narayana)....like wise please stay in our house (mind) also.


Ca 3 :

Oh Mother ! You are the beautiful and charming Golden Idol with the sixteen artistic beauties. You are the fresh bud of the everlasting VEdAs(means the essence of vedas who praise Narayana). You are in front of us with your consort SrI VEnkaTEswara. Please consider us as your belongings.


PS: When milky ocean was churned for Amrutam(which makes one immortal), so many precious things along with Halahalam (the dangerous poison )emerged from it. Some of them are Moon, white elephant, white horse, kousthubha diamond, etc...and SRI MAHA LAKSHMI . Hence annamayya describes Sri Maha Lakshmi as the sister of Moon.

Background:

In this kIrtana, Annamayya beautifully narrates to the ladies...(Oh! SathulArA !) about the great qualities of Goddess AnDAL (Padmavathi or AlamElu manga) , the consort of Lord SrInivAsa (vEnkaTEswara).


Here in every stanza, Annamayya uses the word "chUDi kuDutha nAnchAri". This word is actually a Tamil word and familiar to Sri Vaishnava sampradAya , which refers to "AnDAL".
(chUDi - pushpa mAlikanu dharinchukoni, koDuttha - SrI ranganAthuniki samarpinchina, nAnchAri - Aame, ammAyi).

Note: Annamayya finds no difference between Srimaha Lakshmi, AnDAL and PadmAvathi.

Meaning:

Pa:

Oh ladies ! See HER (AnDAL) and sing for HER well being. SHE (AnDAL) is now with HER consort (Lord vEnkaTEswara).

ca 1 :

SHE is "SrI MahA lakshmi"(Goddess of wealth) HERSELF, where is the paucity of wealth to HER. SHE is the mother of "kAmuDu"(god of romance), then where is the paucity for HER Beauty(chakkadanamu). SHE is the sister of "Moon" (god of 16 beautiful arts), then where is the paucity of HER beautiful artistry (sompu kaLalu). Thus chUDIkuDutha nAnchAri is so beautiful with all the above qualities.

ca 2 :

SHE is the daughter of "kalasAbdhi" (god of milky ocean with humble nature) , then where is the paucity of HER humility (GambhIramu). SHE is the mother of the whole universe, so where is the paucity of HER mercy(towards all the creatures). SHE resides on the Lotus (Jalaja nivAsini) , then where is the paucity of HER cool nature (to take care of HIS devotees). ChUDikuDutha nAnchAri is thus incomparable (matchless) in the above said qualities.

ca 3 :

SHE is praised by all the gods (amaravandita), then where is the paucity of HER power. SHE is the relative of "Amrutamu" (the symbol of bliss, immortality), then where is the paucity for HER bliss. Knowing that SHE has all these great qualities in HER, lord SrI vEnkaTEswara directly came in love of HER and married HER (As SrI RanganAtha of Sri Rangam). Such a young beautiful goddess is chUDi kuDutha nAnchAri.

Background:

Here Annamayya describes the way , one's mind gets attracted towards the worldly desires and finally the remedy for the above.

MEANING:

pa :

The people who wants to take bath in the sea water after the tides get nullified and for the people with the direction less mind ,where is the end or destiny? (means they will not have the end...The people with endless desires will have no satisfaction)

ca 1 :

If you try to learn philosophy after satisfying all the worldly desires, it will not happen because till u have this body you will be attracted towards the desires and you will not be happy.Hence start knowing philosophy right now.

ca 2 :

If you try to know the knowledge first and then wanted to get rid off from the effects of past actions ( karmAs), what knowledge ( jnAnam) will you know and what the 'sanchitam' (the effect of past karmas) you are going to be get rid off?(means we have that much of our effects of past actions).

Thats why know the strength(The strength of burning effects of all the three actions namely , sanchita, prArabda and AgAmi) of beautiful lord of tiruvenkatam (SrInivAsa) by which you will be benefited the most (you can not even expect the benefits in your dream, that much he will give you).

Hence the only way is to surrender to LORD NARAYANA and praise HIM.

Background of this song:

Here annamayya is explaining the Greatness of the lotus feet of Lord VEnkaTEswara, an incarnation of the supreme lord NARAYANA. He glorifies the lotus feet of VEnkaTEswara remembering the leelas(divine actions) of HIS incarnations.


Meaning:

pa :

This lotus feet of NARAYANA was cleansed by the Brahma(In vAmana avatAram of lord NARAYANA, while measuring the whole universe the Second step of lord went to sathya lOka( residence of Brahma, the four headed god). With this unexpected Guest of lord's feet , Brahma astonished and immediately started cleansing lord's feet by taking the vedAs as water in to his kamanDalam.That water only now called as Ganga). This holy feet itself is "Brahmam"(Note here, it is not brahma(the four faced god, but it is Brahmam, the supreme Lord).

ca 1 :

This holy feet measured the whole world in HIS first step(as i stated above in vAmana avatAram). This holy feet was put on Bali head( a asura king, grand son of a great devotee PrahlAda) during vAmana avatAra, in HIS third step. This holy feet only kicked (measured)the sky in HIS second step. This holy feet only then protected the Bali by sending him in to pAtALa loka (the bottom most loka of the 14 lokas, where lord NARAYANA will be the Guardian for this lOkam, according to a boon given to PrahlAda by lord Himself).

ca 2 :

This Holy feet of Lord NARAYANA cleansed all the sins of the passionate lady(In RAMA avataram of lord , Ahalya after touching this holy feet, got released by the curse of her husband Gautama sage). This holy feet was put on the poisonous snake KAlindi(In krishna avataram of lord, HE put his holy foot prints on the head of this snake and ordered it to vacate the pond for the benefit of the GOkulam). This holy feet is smoothly pressed by HIS consort Sri Maha Lakshmi on milky ocean. This is the holy feet which will be riding on the horse in Kalki avataram.

ca 3 :

This is the holy feet which will grant the salvation in different ways for the great sages. This is the holy feet which showed that this Tirumala (Tiru vEnkaTa giri) hill itself is noting but VAIKUNTAM (paramapadam).

Background of this kIrtana:

Thi kIrtana is a SringAra kIrtana. In this kIrtana, annamayya is beautifully explaining about the 'nAyika' with 'viraham'. He feels himself as a 'viraha nAyika' and narrates the kIrtana. 'kathA vastuvulu'(elements of the story line up) for this kIrtana are paschimAna astaminchE chandrudu(moon),tUrupuna vudayinchE sUryuDu(raising sun),chilukalu(parrots), tummedalu,vikasistunna vennela,mukuListunna kaluvalu, vEsangi moggalu.



Note: Many of the words exact translation i dont know in english , so i used telugu only.


The meaning goes like this...

The viraha nAyika is waiting for his 'nAtha' through out the night...but he not yet came. Then in the morning , she started narrating her feelings with one of his 'cheli' like this.



pa: The eastern hills are getting white and sun is raising in the east, but still my 'vibhuDu' not yet came...



ca 1 : The pearl garlands on my hot breast(because of viraham) are getting cold now, my eyes are getting closed now. The 'kaluva pUlu'(flowers similar to lotus but not lotus ...which blossom in the night and gets shrink in the morning)are shrinking down. 'vEsangi mogga'(flowers similar to lotus which blossom in the day time) is starting to blossom...but still my vibhuDu is not yet came...




ca2: My hairs inside the flowers (she might have covered her hairs with full flowers) are getting dull (neRasi). The 'tummedalu' started for their hunt with great speed. The parrots and like birds (Suka pikamu) started making their noise to wake up the people. I dont know where he is...? He might be spending lovely time with any other lady or what?...



Now her 'vibhuDu'(lord srInivAsa) is coming to her...so after seeing him from some distant place itself... she started narrating the third charaNam like this....



ca3 : Hey(with BIG joy)..there he is..It seems he got bathed in scent('pannIru') and had sprinkled 'pachcha kappuramu' on his body...with lot of flowers having on his 'koppu' (hairs twisted on HIS head)....(like this) the 'tiru vEnkaTEswaruDu' is coming to me to shower his 'karuNa'(mercy) on me and making me to enjoy his karuNa for both my eyes and my mind.

Meaning:

pa:

In this kaliyuga, where all the roads to the salvation are worsened and ceased,He(Ramanujacharya), the great Acharya, like a god he is there to show the way to salvation.

ca 1:

Because of HIS mercy only, in this world we became vaishNavAs. Because of him only we are able to see the "tirumani"(NAmAm on lord venkateswara swamy face).He only revealed and spread the "AshTAkshari mantram"( in tirukOshTiyUr, a village in TamilNadu , after he recieved the mantrafrom his Acharya, he climbed the post in front of the temple and shouted that who ever has interest to know the way to salvation, can come and listen and revealed it to all the interested people). He is none other than "RAMANUJACHARYA", who is the god for both the worlds namely "leelA vibhUti"(This prakritik world) and "nitya vibhUti" (The vaikunTam, where all the jIvatmAs will reach after salvation and will not return from there).


ca 2:

RAMANUJACHARYA only revealed all the secrets of the VEDAS ( through the commentary of "BRAHMA SUTRA", for wchich HE has been praised byGodess Saraswati as "SRI BHASHYAKARA", means "THE COMMENTATOR", though there exists so many commentaries for Brahma sutra, she accepted HIS one only). HE only showed the way of SARANAGATI (surrenderence). HE only re-established "SAMASRAYANAM"(the process of having conch and discus symbols of Lord NARAYANA on one's shoulders). HE is the sweetly talking GOD who walked in front of us.

RAMANUJACHARYA only set the rules for the "PRAPANNAS" (people who surrendered to lord NARAYANA).
